World Food Day has been celebrated on October 16 since 1979 with the aim of raising awareness among the population and strengthening solidarity against hunger , as well as raising awareness about malnutrition (due to obesity, micronutrient deficiencies and undernutrition).
Current problems
Despite the important role of farmers in food production, hunger persists due to climatic factors, economic recessions and other conflicts that severely impact people of all socioeconomic classes.
On the other hand, the most vulnerable people resort to unhealthy diets depending on basic and less expensive foods while others suffer from the lack of availability of fresh and varied foods, lack information to obtain a varied and nutritious diet or simply opt for convenience.
Some countries require humanitarian assistance from developed countries to improve the agri-food system with policies and legislation, with innovation, science, technology and collaboration from governments, the private sector, the educational system and from each one of us choosing healthy foods, caring for the environment and reducing food waste.
Some recommendations
A healthy diet provides the nutrients the body needs to perform its functions in the body, maintain or restore health, minimize the risk of disease, ensure reproduction, gestation, lactation, development and proper growth.
To achieve this we must consume fruits, vegetables, cereals and legumes, dairy products, meats, poultry, fish, and healthy fats daily in adequate and varied quantities.
Poverty, food insecurity and environmental impact are correlated.
Healthy eating is a right for quality of life.
This day is one of the most celebrated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, where around 150 countries around the world participate through activities and outreach events to fight hunger and promote healthy eating.
